Computers Can Be A Headache!

If you're in the Northern New Jersey area, I repair computers as a second job, give me a call or send me an email --- sometimes it's something simple and I will help you fix it for free over the phone ---no kidding. I've gotten a lot of referrals this way. This page will be dedicated to providing all the info possible I have gathered while fixing computers. Be patient it's under construction and I have lots more to add. You can email me at murphy726@comcast.net  or call 973-454-6034

NetSquirrel.com     Slow computer? Click banner, read this great tutorial about MSCONFIG

http://www.netsquirrel.com/ has some excellent info and video tutorials!

Malwarebytes     Spyware, malware, worms, it's free and cleans this garbage out

Spybot - Search & Destroy©® 1.6.2   another great spyware program, especially the "Teatimer" function. Teatimer function uses a good chunk of ram so make sure you have 1GB minimum before enabling this feature.

Welcome to CCleaner   Excellent tool for removing temp files and other garbage that accumulates in your system, and it's free!

Over 300 million downloads!!! Originally called the "Crap Cleaner" ---300 million downloads is one great referral!

Enter AnalogX  Click on the "X" to visit   http://www.analogx.com/    This guy writes some very nice programs for your system, network, website, even a program that removes lyrics from songs for Karaoke.

CA Anti-virus      Click the button to visit Computer Associates Anti-virus page---490 of the Fortune 500 companies use this antivirus program to protect their corporate computers. I have used it for years & highly recommend it. I do not recommend the "Internet Security Suite",  just select the stand-alone antivirus product. Free 90-day trial. They have a special on now $19.99 to protect 1 to 3 computers, this is normally $39.99.

Free antivirus program below, not as robust as the one above but better than nothing:

http://www.free-av.com/en/trialpay_download/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html  The only "free" antivirus I would recommend.

ZoneAlarm Internet Security       http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/free-upgrade-security-suite-zonealarm-firewall.htm

Just download and install the free firewall, it is the best. I DO NOT recommend their all-in-one suite of tools, zone alarm pro, or anything else they offer. Just the free basic firewall and your set as far as firewalls go.

Rules:

Computer rule #1: If you're connected to the internet you MUST have an anti-virus program running and you must get daily updates. If you can pay for one than I highly recommend E-trust antivirus from Computer Associates. There are some decent free programs also.

Computer rule #2:  Install a Firewall. Zonealarm is free and probably the best program out there. No need to buy the "Pro" version.

Computer rule #3:  You NEVER NEVER NEVER click on that link that says:

- you are the 1 millionth visitor to the site and have won a prize

- free scan for your computer for problems/viruses  (ESPECIALLY "antivirus 2009", they infect your machine and then want $50 for their program to clean it)

- get a free laptop or XBOX or HDTV or PS3 or anything else "free"

- EMAIL ATTACHMENTS!!!  SCAN THEM FIRST WITH YOUR ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM

Computer rule #4:  Stay away from waterfall screensavers, or any screensaver for that matter. Stay away from toolbars, like "weather on your desktop",  "Yahoo toolbar" etc etc etc toolbars are meant to collect info from you NOT to make your browsing easier, and they hog up system resources. Free screensavers are notorious for containing viruses and malware.
